Alan Mulally

Legendary Turnaround CEO Reveals How ‘Working Together’ Saved Ford

Search Episodes

Alan Mulally’s leadership philosophy was shaped early on by a lesson from his mother in Kansas. Each day as she dropped him off at school, she’d ask, “What’s the purpose of life?” His reply: “To love and be loved.” Her gentle reminder followed—“In that order.” That idea of service before self became the foundation of Mulally’s approach to leadership.

Throughout his career leading Boeing and Ford, Mulally embodied that belief. He reflected, “To serve is to live… with humility and love for the greater good.” That mindset led him to accept one of corporate America’s greatest challenges: turning around Ford, then losing $17 billion. When Bill Ford asked him to step in, he simply said, “I want your service.” It struck a chord.

At both companies, Mulally led with his “Working Together” model and a clear belief that leadership is about empowering others. His approach earned him global recognition as one of the world’s top CEOs.

Key lessons he shared include:

  • Lead with Vision: A bold, shared goal, backed by strategy and execution, rallied Ford around a comeback mission.
  • Embrace Transparency: He normalized talking about problems through color-coded Business Plan Reviews, urging leaders to show “red” when help was needed.
  • Foster Collaboration: Mulally rejected the idea that leaders must solve problems alone. “Bring the challenge,” he said. “We’ll solve it together.”

In the end, Mulally’s success wasn’t just about business acumen—it was about leading with heart. A lesson that began with his mother’s words: love first, and the rest will follow.
