Long before co-founding Yum! Brands—the parent company of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell—David Novak learned the importance of recognition on a Little League field in Kimball, Nebraska. Inspired by his father, who coached his team and turned an unathletic player into a valuable contributor, Novak carried this lesson into his career: “As a leader, your job is to help people succeed.”
At Yum! Brands, Novak made employee recognition a cornerstone of the company’s culture. He implemented creative initiatives like presenting standout employees with rubber chickens, handwritten notes, and framed photos, reinforcing their contributions in meaningful ways. “You’re what makes our business tick,” was his message to employees.
During his time working at Pepsi, Novak experienced an “aha moment” when an employee named Bob shared that he had never realized how much his colleagues admired him until two weeks before his retirement after 47 years. The experience hit Novak deeply and inspired him to ensure recognition was a priority in every team he led. “When you recognize people sincerely, you give away a piece of your heart,” Novak said.
Recognition, Novak believes, is not just a management tool but a deeply human practice that fosters a culture of appreciation and drives organizational success.
Leaders can achieve extraordinary results by actively seeking opportunities to acknowledge contributions—big and small—and making recognition heartfelt and consistent.
