Tallahassee, Fla. – Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011 – Sports writer Don Yaeger became a five-time New York Times best-selling author with the release of his newest book: I Beat the Odds. The book, co-written by Michael Oher – the centerpiece of the Blind Side and NFL Ravens’ offensive tackle – debuted on the best-seller list Friday, Feb. 18, at number six.
The book has given Oher the chance to share his story in his own words, in his own voice, revealing details never released before.
“Because The Blind Side basically began with his ‘rescue,’ it failed to show the reality of his childhood,” Yaeger said. “He was one of 13 children born to a drug-addicted mother who raised him in one of America’s most dangerous housing projects.”
Growing up in the Memphis inner-city ghetto, Oher set goals for himself to change his future and break out of the projects. Football would become his ticket to a better life. Oher contributes much of his success to his adoptive family, the Touhys, and other influential people in his inner circle.
Yaeger has authored more than a dozen books, including A Game Plan for Life with John Wooden, Never Die Easy with Walter Payton and Devoted with Dick Hoyt. Before he began his career as an author, Yaeger spent 10 years at Sports Illustrated covering the magazine’s groundbreaking stories.
The first 10 years of his career were spent as a reporter for newspapers in San Antonio, Dallas and Jacksonville. Yaeger has conducted more than 2,000 interviews, including the President of the United States, Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and NBA legend Michael Jordan. On the flip side, he has been interviewed more than 100 times on many national television talk shows, including: Oprah, Nightline, Good Morning America, CNN, 20/20, Dateline and Fox.
